Fall sees Hanyu settle for silver at worlds
SHANGHAI (Kyodo) -- Japan's defending world champion Yuzuru Hanyu's spirited late rally was not enough to overcome falling on a jump as he finished runner-up to Spain's Javier Fernandez at the World Figure Skating Championships on Saturday, when Japan won two silver medals.
In a season that saw Hanyu overcome one setback after another, a scary collision, a training injury and abdominal surgery, the 20-year-old Olympic champ was unable to overcome a fall early in his free program and finished with 271.08 points. Hanyu entered the free skate with a narrow lead over Spain's Javier Fernandez, who earned 273.90 points in a flawless program to succeed Hanyu as world champ.
"Honestly speaking, I feel really, really frustrated," said Hanyu, whose season was put in jeopardy in November after a practice collision on the same rink in Shanghai during the Grand Prix Series.
"But right until the very, very end, I am happy I could give it my all on this rink -- especially on this rink."
"This season was filled with good and bad. A lot of things happened and that experience will serve me well, not just in my skating career but in my life as a whole."
Denis Ten of Khazakstan, the Sochi Olympic bronze medalist, was third with 267.72 points. Japan's Takahiko Kozuka finished 12th, while countryman Takahito Mura was 16th.
While Hanyu was a favorite to become Japan's first skater to repeat as world champ, 17-year-old compatriot Satoko Miyahara was one of the day's surprises with a silver medal in her worlds debut.
Miyahara earned a career-high 126.58 points to finish fourth in the free program, but her total of 193.60 points was good enough for overall silver in her worlds debut. It was the 10th straight worlds in which Japan has put a women's skater among the top three.
"I'm so happy, but also surprised, because I thought it would be very difficult to reach the medals podium," Miyahara said. "I've only been skating as a senior for a short time. This point marks my real starting point."
Russia's Elizaveta Tuktamysheva combined her victory in the short program with the best free skate, giving her on overwhelming total of 210.36 points and her first world championship. Countrywoman Elena Radionova, who was second in the short program was sixth in the free skate and had to settle for overall bronze.
Japan's Rika Hongo finished sixth with 184.58 points after finishing fifth in both programs, while Kanako Murakami was seventh overall.
